Forty four degrees in the shade, a story of opal fever

A$35.00

It’s a tiny speck on the map in the vast Australian outback where fortune hunters seek the most elusive and glorious of gemstones......opal.

One hundred and fifty people live in this god-forsaken place where temperatures regularly reach 44 degrees in the shade in summer and people retreat to the cool of their underground dugouts.

Life is raw in this pressure-cooker. The heat and isolation, lack of a police presence, absence of a moral authority or any structure that represents the whole community means that power is in the hands of any person, or group that makes a grab for it.

We follow the story of Matt who has escaped the constraints of his soul-less city life to seek his fortune opal mining, and Tess who has been living and working in the town for six years, struggling with the power players and town politics.

Humorous and thought provoking rants on the nature of wankers, romance, truth, quality, wisdom, despair and human nature are interspersed throughout the story.

The story paints a picture of modern life, the current state of the world in general, the challenges of being human, and how a cohesive community of likeable misfits becomes a dysfunctional town full of vicious backstabbers out to hurt each other.
